This study examined the patterns, levels, and types of errors according to Chinese language user’s usage of prefinal endings in the learner error corpus constructed by the National Institute of the Korean Language. The analysis showed that the higher the proficiency level in the written corpus, the lower the error rate of the spoken word ending, and the opposite applies to the spoken corpus. The written and spoken corpus share a lot of common tense errors, especially in the past tense. The study further examined the patterns of the prefinal ending errors amongst the Chinese-speaking Korean learners. The types of errors in the prefinal endings according to the level of error and the aspect of error were analyzed. The errors in the prefinal endings were found to be mainly due to syntactic errors. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrates the necessity of separating written language and spoken language in the Korean language education. It thus can serve as useful resources for teachers, learners, and researchers in Korean language education. (Central China Normal University·Yonsei University)

This study suggested the selection criteria for lists of passive verbs in '-i/hi/li/gi-' passive units in Korean language textbooks, based on the passive verb lists appropriate for the criteria by stage proposed in this study. In addition, this study conducted a comparative analysis of the lists of this study with the lists of passive verbs included in passive units. As a result, a variety of teaching-learning problems were identified, including a simultaneous presentation of multiple passive verbs of diverging characteristics in the passive unit. In order to solve this problem, this study argues that the similarities, differences, and characteristics of passive verb sentences composed of the passive verbs must be considered when selecting and presenting passive verbs. In addition, as the selection criteria for passive verbs, the infinitive form and its characteristics of a passive verb are utilized. Also, by emphasizing the existence of agent subject realization, passive verbs of passive verb sentences where an agent subject is realized with '-ege' are presented first, followed by passive verbs of passive verb sentences where an agent subject is not realized with '-ege'. As such, educational measures should group together passive verbs with commonality in sentence structures for presentation and explain common sentence structures in creating a passive verb sentence with passive verbs of the pertinent group. A textbook that presents explicit rules as such will help students develop a clear and better understanding of the goal of grammar for passive verbs. (Soongsil University)

This study investigated how both L2 learner groups with different mother tongues (Chinese, English) acquire the fluency factors of the target language (Korean) longitudinally. It was expected that the effect of L2 learners' mother tongue was involved in the fluency judgement process. Thirtythree subjects with different L1 groups (English, Chinese) and with similar years of learning (1yr, 2yrs) participated in the experiments, along with seven native Korean speakers as a control group. The results show that the L1 background language and L2 learning duration exhibit dissimilar influence on the acquisition of the L2 fluency. More precisely, the L1 effect has been decreased in its effect on fluency judgement, while the learning duration has been increased in the later stage, in which they achieved around 40 to 50 percent of fluency ratings in two years. Also, both independent effects trigger an uneven influence on Korean native speakers' judging the fluency; speech rate appears to be one of the most influential cues. (Konkuk University)

This study introduced grit as a predictor variable influencing learner's achievement in the Korean language curriculum. In addition, this study conducted an experiment with 137 Chinese college students studying Korean to determine how the intimacy and trust of the learner towards the teacher affects grit. The following results were confirmed. First, the emotional intimacy, behavioral intimacy, and trust that Korean learners felt about teachers had a significant impact on the effort sustainability factor of grit. Second, for the effect of intimacy that the learner feels towards the teacher on the teacher's trust, both emotional and behavioral intimacy had a significant effect on trust. This suggests the possibility that intimacy and trust are interrelated and at the same time intimacy is a leading factor over trust. Third, for the effect of intimacy on grit, studies of the mediating effects of confidence show that confidence between emotional intimacy and the effort sustainability factor of grit acts as an incomplete mediator variable. This study was the first to introduce the concept of grit for Korean language learners. The research suggests that learner's intimacy and trust in teachers affects their level of grit and learner's affective domain can be developed by external factors of learners. It is also meaningful that this study found out that the role of the Korean teacher can influence the learner's will and effort from their inner world beyond simply teaching knowledge of Korean. The goal of this study is to investigate which factors need to be considered when developing a teaching and learning design for Korean language in virtual reality learning environment. To achieve such goal, the study analyzed cases where educational contents were offered using virtual reality in the field of language education. The analytical result confirmed that educational contents in virtual reality learning environment reinforced the self-directedness in learners by constructing a design allowing learners to choose their favored communication situation and provided language guide to activate interactions. Additionally, the result also showed that created environment strengthened sense of reality and immersiveness and allowed the transfer of learning through repetitive practices. However, taking into account the learning environment in virtual reality, it was also confirmed that there are still factors to be considered including induction of choices, interaction among learners, reinforcement of the sense of reality, and setting learning phases. Thus, this study offers suggestions on factors to be considered in designing a teaching and learning system for Korean language in virtual environment by taking into account perspectives in learner's self-directedness, interaction, learning environment, and learning step. This study attempted to grasp the characteristics of errors according to the proficiency level of Korean learners by statistically analyzing the corpus in large-scale learners. This study examined the characteristics of proficiency-level errors in the location, pattern, and level of errors in the learner's corpus using the multinominal logistic regression model along with observing the occurrence rate. As a result, some errors showed that the frequency or probability of occurrence decreased significantly as the proficiency level increased, but there were some types of errors that appeared steadily. Through this study, the characteristic types of proficiency-level errors were presented. This study is significant in that it statistically searched for significant variables at each stage of learning by comparing and analyzing the overall errors using large-scale learner balanced corpus data. The purpose of this study is to analyze the experience of overseas Korean preschoolers in a Korean language class and to understand their experiences through qualitative research methods. The researcher analyzed the specific process and experiences of Hai by participating in this Korean language class in other countries. Based on this, the researcher was able to examine the difficulties of the Korean language learning class and suggests solutions on how to overcome them. This study also provides basic materials of curriculum design for Korean language classrooms. To carry out this study, the researcher collected relevant basic data from March, and observed and recorded the Korean classroom classes from May to November 2019. The results of analyzing the experience of an overseas Korean child Hai are as follows: First, Hai showed a tendency to distinguish between “being” and “missing” in the process of Korean learning while using a method of learning in his native language scheme, and showed conflict with aspects such as “accepting” or “revealing” the Korean language located between the second language and the heritage language. Although he had a strange view and attitude with the “unfamiliar” way of learning Korean as a foreign language, he gradually showed a tendency to overcome it from “inherent intimacy”. Based on these findings, a vivid understanding and ongoing exploration of the Korean learning experience of overseas Korean children should be made in the future, and practical implications should be obtained in the design of the related curriculum. This paper explores the language identity of international students who translate English materials into Korean in an academic setting (AS). The informants of this study are neither the first language users of English nor Korean. While they are required to read scholarly papers of their field in English, they are required to present in Korean. This study consists of a translation experiment and interview. After the translation experiment, questions were asked such as the experience of translation and feelings of English in AS, things that make them feel difficult in translation experiments. The interview data were collected and coded following the practices of grounded theory. By analyzing the codes, interactional and social features of the English-Korean translating process were found. Interactional features of the translation process codes are explained as cultural adaptation. It infers that informants experienced culture shock for the first time and then gradually found a way to deal with academic translation. Thus, it is explained by the acculturation theory. Social features of the codes were found to be analyzed by theories concerning the prestige of English. Each informant applies the prestige and power of English differently according to their former academic experiences when translating English texts into Korean in an AS. This may help explain the linguistic identity of individual informants. This study concerns the intervention of English, which has been neglected in the study of Korean language education for academic purposes. In the field of English-Korean translation where translation occurs as an academic practice, international students face linguistic barriers and are affected by the power of languages in the domain which enables them to find their identity as an international student in Korea. Metaphoric expressions require pragmatic competence, which allows the listener to understand the implied meaning. This makes it difficult for foreign language learners with different cultural and lingual background to fully understand metaphors of the target language, for it is not used conventionally. This study conducted a two-way ANOVA to determine whether there is a difference between the capabilities of understanding Korean metaphors among Vietnamese learners majoring in Korean languages in Vietnamese Universities, depending on the type of metaphoric expression and proficiency. For this research, Korean metaphors were categorized into 4 types, depending on whether or not the metaphor was used the same way and exists in Vietnamese language. As a result of this study, junior students with better proficiency in all types showed a high understanding in Korean metaphors. In addition, Vietnamese Korean learners showed relatively better understanding in types that had the same forms and meanings in Vietnamese, as well as those that could be understood by using common sense and universal knowledge. On the other hand, it was confirmed that metaphors that do not exist in Vietnamese and metaphors that are based on different cultural specificities were difficult to understand, suggesting the need foreducation on types of metaphors. In recent years, Korean language education in Vietnam has been flourishing not only in universities but also in high schools and foreign language centers. Comparing to 10 years ago, the number of Korean teachers and learners has increased dramatically. Currently, it can be said that Vietnam is a country that has been developing brilliantly in the field of Korean language teaching among Southeast Asian countries. This paper will review the situation of teaching Korean language at major universities and educational institutions in Vietnam. In other words, it can be affirmed that Vietnam's education and research branch in Korean language and Korean studies has grown beyond the stable threshold and is undergoing a drastic change. The paper also proposed directions and solutions for the development of Korean language education and Korean studies in Vietnam in the future.
