The aim of this paper is to provide a cognitive semantic analysis of multimodal viewpoint phenomena by conducting a case study of political campaign posters from the United Kingdom’s Conservative and Labour parties. It provides a qualitative account of a selection of posters within the framework of Discourse Viewpoint Space (Dancygier and Vandelanotte 2016), specifically exploring discourse viewpoint configurations in the posters with a special focus on their texts (e.g., lexical choices and style), visual images, and the viewpoints of different participants (i.e., current speaker/addressee and represented speaker/addressee). We collected 87 posters from the Advertising Archives (http://www.advertisingarchives.co.uk) in August 2018. We categorized the selected posters into three types: (1) those explicitly encoding the speaker, (2) those explicitly encoding the addressee, and (3) those explicitly encoding both. We take a detailed look at each type, focusing on whether the viewpoint of the current interlocutor is aligned with that of the represented interlocutor, assuming that the current speaker is equivalent to those who design the posters, and the current addressee to those who view the posters. Based on this inductive functional taxonomy, this paper discusses how the multimodal posters’ political messages are constructed and construed in terms of the levels of hierarchical viewpoint networks, which include local perspectives and more comprehensive discourse viewpoints, as well as viewpoint alignment between the participants. The study shows that the viewpoint configurations of the posters are key to the articulation of the intended messages such that they fit the values of the two political parties. The study also supports the claim that multiple viewpoints are intrinsic to meaning construction, and to the conceptualization of multimodal expressions (Sweetser 2012). We claim that across-the-board (ATB) and right node raising (RNR) constructions in English should be analyzed in a uniform way, but neither of them can be on a par with parasitic gap (PG) constructions. To support this claim, we demonstrate that only the former two can license additive coordination (AC) and interwoven dependency (ID). We then offer a novel derivational analysis of the (un)availability of AC and ID in the three constructions. Specifically, we propose that cross-clausal conjunction via External Remerge (ER) constructs parallel coordinate structure in ATB and RNR while illegitimate linear ordering in the resulting multidominance structure is constrained by PF constraints; by contrast, ER does not yield the same kind of coordinate structure for PGs since subordination is required for the PG construction. 초록보기

Since Chomsky's (1970) observation that clauses and arguments can project parallel syntactic structures, the parallelism between the nominal and verbal domains has been explored in many studies. This paper addresses a particular parallelism between two functional projections in the nominal and verbal domains: Num(ber)P and Asp(ect)P. Specifically, NumP in the nominal domain is proposed to be parallel to AspP in the verbal domain, and in an English-type language this parallelism is represented by having the same feature, such as [bounded], on both heads. However, it is questionable to what extent the parallelism proposed for an English-type language can be applicable to a classifier language such as Mandarin where CL(assifier)P is known to be the locus of number. By examining the properties of verbal classifiers in Mandarin to address this issue, this paper not only shows that there is a parallelism in Mandarin similar to that in English, but also demonstrates that the parallelism is subject to cross-linguistic micro-variation. In Mandarin, for instance, there is a correspondence between CLP and AspP, but the relevant feature for the parallelism is [class(ification)], which is not the same as the [bounded] feature proposed for English. 초록보기

This study aims to investigate to what extent grammatical variables are related to each other in order to predict the discourse-based classification of English relative clause extraposition (RCE) construction with the help of a total 597 corpus data. In doing so, an extraposed relative pronoun is assumed to function as a cohesive device, thereby classifying RCE construction into four types according to discourse manner: Discourse-Old-Old-RCE, Discourse-Old-New-RCE, Discourse-New-Old-RCE, and Discourse-New-New-RCE. This discourse-based classification tells us which information is prevalent within an extraposed relative clause as well as a subject NP. Multinomial logistic regression is used for determining which one among the indefiniteness/definiteness of a subject NP, the predicate type (i.e., passive, presentative intransitive, and predicative complement of copula be), and/or grammatical weight (i.e., subject NP-to-extraposed RC length ratio) primarily has the inclination for each type of RCE construction. The definiteness of a subject NP, passive voice, and positive value of the length ratio are critical predictors to bring about Discourse-Old-Old-RCE and Discourse-Old-New-RCE, whereas the indefiniteness of a subject NP is a main predictor of Discourse-New-Old-RCE and Discourse-New-New- RCE. Interestingly, only Discourse-New-Old-RCE taking up the largest portion in this corpus study has a negative correlation with the length ratio. In other words, both a small number of constituents within a subject NP and heavy information within an extraposed relative clause are strongly associated with the occurrence of Discourse-New-Old-RCE. Therefore, the conclusive statement is drawn that the grammatical heaviness within a restrictive relative clause becomes a powerful trigger for the extraposition. (Chodang University)

The relationship between second language (L2) vowel production as a function of L2 experience and its perceptual judgments by native listeners of the language was investigated to determine whether the production improvement in the specific acoustics of L2 vowels give rise to higher judgement accuracy. A total of 20 Mandarin Chinese differing in the L2 experience (6 months vs. 2 years) were compared to ten native Korean speakers in their production of seven Korean vowels. The vowel production was used for an identification test by 23 native Korean speaking listeners to further verify the effects of L2 experience on the native Korean listeners' judgments of Chinese speakers' vowel production. For the analyses, F1 and F2 values of the initial vowels were measured and normalized across the three groups. The production results showed that the Korean mid vowels /ε/ and /Λ/ were produced in a more native-like manner with increased L2 experience. As for the perception results, Chinese speakers' non-native-like production of Korean vowels /ε/ and /Щ/ showed high judgement accuracy, whereas more native-like vowels /u/ and /Λ/ displayed significantly lower accuracy. Overall, the acoustic distinctiveness, rather than native-likeness, of the L2 vowel categories was shown to yield higher accuracy for the perceptual judgments by native listeners. 초록보기

The main purpose of this article is to bring to light the common behavior of the so-called '/s/-irregular' and '/h/-final' stems in Korean, focusing on the similarly opaque phonological behavior of those stems when they encounter vowel-initial suffixes. It is proposed that their phonological similarity should be due to the lack of place feature in their input specifications of the stem-final consonants. The proposal follows from the discussion that combining the notion of Richness of the Base with Lexicon Optimization in optimality-theoretic framework, language learners should consult surface alternations and choose input forms that map onto outputs in the least offensive way with respect to the grammar of ranked constraints. Adopting placeless specifications as their input for both /s/-irregular and /h/-final stems, their apparent opaque alternations are adequately dealt with employing independently motivated universal constraints. The irregular status of /s/-irregular stems in Korean is still maintained but the source of their peculiar behavior turns out to be the lack of place feature just like /h/. Under the proposed ranking of constraints, it is also best explained that the stem-final /s/ in /s/-irregular stems gets their empty place node filled through the help of spreading from the following obstruent while that in /s/-regular stems is simply brought into the purview of place assimilation. I conclude that all relevant cases of /s/- and /h/-final stems can be dealt with successfully in a framework that has recourse to input specifications. (Sookmyung Women's University)
