Hop cones (Humuli Strobili) are the female inflorescences of hop plants (Humulus lupulus L.) belonging to the family Cannabaceae. They have been used as herbal remedies to treat mood and sleep disturbances, and mainly to add as a bittering ingredient in brewing process. Considerable interests on pharmacological and biological activities of hop cones have been focused on their major constituents, namely, phloroglucinols (humulone, lupulone), terpenes (myrcene, humulene), and prenylated flavonoids (xanthohumol, isoxanthohumol, 6-prenylnaringenin, and 8-prenylnaringenin). The present review describes and discusses biological activity profiles of these major compounds in the hop cones.

It has been extensively known in the high temperature regions such as southern China and south east Asia that Korean ginseng(Panax ginseng) intake raises body heat, while American ginseng(Panax quinquefolium) lowers it, based upon oriental medicine. This is likely due to the misunderstanding of the conception that Korean ginseng shows a warm property, resulting in enhanced blood circulation and stimulation of metabolism. It's further supported by the fact that current scientific studies have shown no notable side effects. Moreover, it has been demonstrated in animal experimental test that Korean ginseng shows a complementary effect in a high temperature environment, together with scientific evidence of a preventive effect of ginseng saponin against cold conditions, suggesting it to exhibit an adaptogenic effect normalizing the body under abnormal body conditions. However, there is a shortage of studies published concerning comparative clinical and animal studies of Korean and American ginsengs, and also, on natives of high temperature countries. Therefore, a further placebo-controlled clinical study has to be considered to elucidate scientifically clinical evaluation of Korean and American ginsengs on the body heat. In this article, we summarize the scientific publications reporting the clinical comparative study of Korean and American ginsengs on body heat response.

Artemisia annua L. (Compositae) is an annual herb, which has been traditionally used as an antipyretic and hemostatic agent with the herbal medicine name of Cheong Ho (菁蒿) in Korea and China. In this study, five di-caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and a coumarin were determined from the hot-water extract of aerial parts of A. annua. The structures of isolates were elucidated to be 1,3-di-O-caffeoylqunic acid (1), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (2), 3,5-di-O-caffeoylqiunic acid (3), 1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (4) and 4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5) and scopoletin (6). The presence of 1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (4) is firstly reported from A. annua in the current study.

3′,4′-Disenecioylkhellactone is one of khellactone-type coumarins isolated from the roots of Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. However, its pharmacological effects are still little understood. In the present study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of 3′,4′-disenecioylkhellactone on growth of gastric cancer cells. 3′,4′-Disenecioylkhellactone strongly suppressed cell proliferation and induced caspase-mediated apoptosis in AGS human gastric cancer cells. Analysis of phospho-antibody arrays revealed 3′,4′-disenecioylkhellactone effectively suppressed signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) tyrosine phosphorylation. 3′,4′-Disenecioylkhellactone decreased STAT3 translocation to the nucleus and expression of STAT3 target genes. In addition, we examined the level of STAT3 activation in several gastric cancer cells and found that the inhibition of STAT3 phosphorylation by 3′,4′-disenecioylkhellactone was associated with gastric cancer cell proliferation. Taken together, this study provides evidence for the first time that 3′,4′-disenecioylkhellactone may be a potential therapeutic agent for the prevention or treatment of gastric cancer.

Parkinson's disease (PD), one of common neurodegenerative diseases, is caused by the death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The loss of dopaminergic neurons in PD is associated with oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Hyperoside (quercetin 3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside) was reported to have protective properties against oxidative stress by reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increasing antioxidant enzyme activity. In this study, we examined the neuroprotective effect of hyperoside against 1-methyl-4-phenyl pyridinium (MPP+)-induced cell model of PD and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Hyperoside significantly decreased MPP+-induced cell death, accompanied by a reduction in poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) cleavage. Furthermore, it attenuated MPP+-induced intracellular ROS and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), with the reduction of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. Moreover, hyperoside significantly increased the phosphorylation of Akt, but it has no effects on GSK3β and MAPKs. Pharmacological inhibitor of PI3K/Akt abolished the cytoprotective effects of hyperoside against MPP+. Taken together, these results demonstrate that hyperoside significantly attenuates MPP+-induced neurotoxicity through PI3K/Akt signaling pathways in SH-SY5Y cells. Our findings suggest that hyperoside might be one of the potential candidates for the treatment of PD.

The fruits of Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus (Rupr. & Maxim.) S. Y. Hu (Araliaceae), as edible fruits, were traditionally used for ingredients of wine or tea in Eastern Asia. In addition to, the fruits of E. sessiliflorus were known for having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Recently, we investigated that the ethanolic extracts of E. sessiliflorus fruits (DHP1501) have effects on hypertension via vasorelaxation and decrease of blood pressure. In the present study, we investigated that the gene and protein expression levels of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) was increased by treatment of DHP1501 in HUVECs. Moreover, we confirmed the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activity of DHP1501 through in vitro tasks. Therefore, DHP1501 could be a candidate of functional food for alleviating hypertension.

Pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extract (GS-E3D) is a newly developed ginsenoside Rd-enriched ginseng extract. This study was designed to investigate the skin safety of GS-E3D. Single oral toxicity, single dermal toxicity, bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay, skin irritation test with SkinEthicTM human epidermis model, skin sensitization local lymph node assay, and human patch test, were examined. The oral and dermal LD50 value of GS-E3D was over 2,000 mg/kg in rats. GS-E3D was identified as a non-irritant to skin in BCOP assay, human epidermis models, and patch test from the 32 human subjects. The skin sensitization potential of GS-E3D was less than 25% in local lymph node assay. These results indicate that GS-E3D can be used as a safe ingredient without adverse effects in various skin care products.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-helicobacter activity and anti-inflammatory activity of Angelica dahurica (AD). The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of AD against Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori), expression of the H. pylori cagA gene in the presence of AD was determined. Inhibition of H. pylori urease by AD, inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production in AGS cells was measured. IL-8 mRNA expression in AGS cells which were infected with H. pylori and IL-8 level was measured. The MIC of MeOH Ex. of AD was 250 μg/mL and the expression of cagA gene was decreased about 88% in the presence of AD. The activity of H. pylori urease was inhibited 70% by AD. mRNA expression of IL-8 and the production of NO and IL-8 were significantly decreased in the presence of AD. In conclusion, AD showed anti-Helicobacter activity and has potent anti-inflammatory effect on H. pylori-induced inflammation in human gastric epithelial AGS cells.

Sparassis crispa (Wulf.) is an edible/medicinal mushroom and has been reported to biological activities such as antitumor, anti-angiogenesis, antioxidant and wound healing. However, there have not been many researches on osteoarthritis of S. crispa. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of S. crispa extract on rats with osteoarthritis induced by MIA. Osteoarthritis is a gradually developmental disease that early stage, causes joint stiffness and complains of joint pain. In addition, it gives rise to edema and hypo-function. The results of this study, S. crispa extract effectively inhibited ROS production, increased the production of antioxidant protein SOD and catalase in knee joint cartilage tissue. In addition, S. crispa extract inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes such as NOX4 and P47phox, which are involved in the expression of COX-2, iNOS and the production of ROS. Also, S. crispa extract inhibited the destruction of synovial tissue, cartilage tissue and proteoglycans in articular cartilage in rats.

Pyungwi-san has been used to treat the digestive system diseases, physconia, nausea, anorexia, and dyspepsia in Korea. In this study, an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method was optimized for simultaneous determination of the 14 marker components, spinosin, liquiritirn apioside, liquiritin, narirutin, 6″′-feruloylspinosin, hesperidin, liquiritigenin, glycyrrhizin, 6-gingerol, atractylenolide III, honokiol, atractylenolide II, magnolol, and atractylenolide I in Pyungwi-san extract. All analytes were separated on a Waters Acquity UPLC BEH C18 analytical column (2.1×100 mm, 1.7 μm) with maintained at 45° C. The mobile phase consisted of 0.1% (v/v) aqueous formic acid and acetonitrile. The MS conditions were as follows: capillary voltage 3.3 kV, extractor voltage 3.0 V, RF lens voltage 0.3 V, source temperature 120℃, desolvation temperature 300℃, desolvation gas 600 L/h, cone gas 50 L/h and collision gas 0.14 mL/min. The coefficient of determination of 14 analytes was 0.9989-1.0000. The limits of detection and quantification values of the all analytes were 0.04-2.56 and 0.13-7.69 ng/mL, respectively. As a result of the analysis using the established LC-ESI-MS/MS method, the 5 components, spinosin, 6'''-feruloylspinosin, atractylenolide III, II, and I derived from Zizyphi Fructus and Atractylodis Rhizoma, were not detected in this extract. On the other hand, the 9 components except for the 5 components were 4.15-498.87 mg/kg in lyophilized Pyungwi-san extract. Among these components, glycyrrhizin, marker compound of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, was detected the most amount as a 498.87 mg/kg.
