12015 개정 교육과정에 기반한 영어Ⅰ 교과서의 어형론적 복잡성

This paper aims to investigate the use of derivational forms in five English Ⅰ textbooks based on the 2015 revised English national curriculum, which treats a base word and all of its derivatives as belonging to one word family. To this end, we first identified 15 representative derivational affixes for the five EnglishⅠ textbooks, based on Bauer and Nation's (1993) levels and the frequency, dispersion and range of affixes. We then showed that the textbooks significantly differ concerning the use of affixes belonging to Bauer and Nation's Levels 3-6 through a chi-square test of homogeneity, and measured the derivative sophistication for each textbook in terms of Advanced Derivative Index, which is calculated by dividing the number of derivative types containing Bauer and Nation's Levels 5 and 6 affixes by the square root of the total number of derivatives. We also through chi-square tests showed that the textbooks significantly differ concerning derivational density, which is defined as the number of derivatives divided by the total number of words, as well as the frequency of derivatives classified by the number of affixes attached to a base, and concluded with the discussion of the findings.

The purpose of the present study was to analyze how much primary and secondary English education are connected for the 7th grade students to learn English efficiently as they make a transition to an upper school level. For this purpose, English curricula of the primary and secondary education were reviewed and three primary English classes and three secondary English classes were observed. The classes were analyzed in terms of teaching and learning activities, interaction between the teacher and students, tasks for students, and use of classroom English. The results showed that the English curricula of primary and secondary levels were related with spiral learning goals and tasks. However, some discrepancy as well as connectivity between the primary and secondary English classes were found from the lesson observations. Based on the findings, teaching models to support the connectivity of primary and secondary English classes were developed. Limitations of the study and suggestions for further research were also discussed.

2015 Revised National Curriculum emphasizes students-centered classroom activities, cooperative learning and integration of the contents within and across the subjects. In order to investigate the state of instruction and learning in 2015 revised National Curriculum, the first year middle and high school teachers, who had experienced both 2009 and 2015 revised curriculum participated as subjects in the survey. The results showed that 81.94% of middle school teachers and 70.11% of high school teachers answered that more students-centered activities and cooperative problem-solving activities are being applied comparing 2009 curriculum. For the activation of students-centered instruction, the teachers suggested as followings. First, the teachers need to have more time for the preparation of instruction, with the reduced administrative work. Second, the teachers need various instructional materials that they can use in the classroom. Third, reducing the number of students in the classroom is required for the students-centered activities.

By reviewing previous studies in Korea, this paper analyzes the relationship between English learning motivation and achievement. For this purpose, first, previous research was classified into five categories based on major motivational constructs, which proved to have a significant influence on English proficiency. The five categories include the socio-educational model (Gardner, 1985), the self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000), the goal-orientation theory (Ames, 1992), the L2 motivational self-system (Dornyei, 2005), and competitive motivation and its relative components. The motivational languaging activities developed by Kim (2019) is also introduced as a practical method of increasing students' motivational level and their English proficiency. By summarizing the notable findings regarding the effect of motivation on achievement, this review paper provides educational implications and sheds light on the area requiring more academic investigation in the future.

5Affection and Gratitude: Korean EFL Learners'Construction of Emotion across Different Proficiency Levels

This study examines how L2 emotion is constructed across learners of different proficiency levels in a video elicitation task. After viewing a video clip, the participants were asked to imagine what the characters would have said, and this task was used to elicit talk that centers on the emotions of affection and gratitude. The main findings indicate that the novice-level students mostly favored expressions like “I love you” and “thank you.” Although their responses were grammatically correct, some of them evaluated their own imagined dialogue as being simplistic. The intermediate-level students provided responses that were lengthier, syntactically more complex, richer in content, and more various in their types of speech act. The responses of the advanced-level participants, on the other hand, were brief, simple, and less various. Instead, their responses marked a strong preference for nonverbal displays of affection and gratitude, which was based on an analysis of the video character's relationship. These findings not only shed light on the changing trajectories of L2 emotion but also produce pedagogical implications for EFL classrooms.
