1Native Language or Target Language? Effects of Different Types of Subtitles on Productive Skills

This paper attempts to determine the effects of different types of subtitles on Korean EFL students' English language productive skills: speaking and writing performance. This study was conducted in spring semester 2019. There was a total of 52 first-year college students in this study. The participants were divided into two subtitle groups: native language subtitles (n=27) and target language subtitles (n=25). They were asked to watch American television episodes in class with either Korean subtitles or English subtitles. Before and after the treatment, all participants took speaking and writing pre- and post-tests to determine the differential effects of subtitle types on English productive skills - speaking and writing. A perception survey was also carried out to explore the participants' experience of language learning with subtitled audiovisual materials. Findings reveal that native language subtitles significantly improved EFL speaking and writing performance. Compared to the native language group, the target language group showed better performance, but the difference was not significant. However, the target language group showed more positive perception of subtitle use for EFL learning. Based on these findings, pedagogical implications and limitations are provided.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between grammar achievement and the uses of the strategies in flipped pre-class online and in-class learning. A total of 108 students participated in this study. Results showed that, overall, the participants used metacognitive strategies most in the pre-class online learning setting while using help-seeking strategies most in the in-class learning setting. Considering grammar achievements, students with high achievement used metacognitive strategies most in the pre-class online learning setting and help-seeking strategies in the in-class learning setting. On the other hand, low level learners used environment-control strategies most in the pre-class online learning setting while using help-seeking strategies most in the in-class learning setting. According to the results, pedagogical implications were suggested.

This study examined the syntactic complexity of reading passages in the College Entrance English Examination and English II, high school textbooks which inform the target difficulty level of the examination. A total of 68 passages from the three most recently administered papers of the examination and 29 passages from four randomly selected textbooks were analyzed using L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer, a software program which provides 14 indices of syntactic complexity. Kruskal-Wallis H tests indicated that in terms of all 14 indices the examination and the textbooks maintained the constant levels of syntactic complexity across years and publishers, respectively. In addition, Kruskal-Wallis H tests and Mann-Whitney U tests showed that in 10 out 14 indices of syntactic complexity reading passages from the examination were more complex syntactically than those from the textbooks. Implications of the findings are discussed, and directions for future research are also suggested.

This research reports an ethnography of English underachievers from a Korean middle school. Studies in education view academic achievement as an individual and private matter, attributing learning difficulties mainly to individual psychological factors, such as a lack of motivation and/or anxiety. This study takes an ethnographic approach to understand to what extent English classes in school support underachievers' academic progress. The study findings are as follows: 1) academic streaming provided little support for underachievers to prepare for school exams by which their academic progress would be judged; 2) underachievers experience marginalization in after-school class because its test-oriented practice did not address their linguistic needs. Challenging the assumption that input-oriented English education policy should address student underachievement, this study calls for a new understanding of underachievement as part of working-class youth culture.

This study investigates Korean secondary EFL teachers' task choice and their consideration during lesson planning. A total of 146 English teachers in middle and high schools were surveyed, and the data were analyzed using frequency analysis and multiple response analysis. The results show that when they are asked to choose a certain task to teach a unit using a textbook, they prefer: prediction tasks when introducing a unit, general knowledge tasks to teach listening and speaking, student as question master tasks to assess listening and speaking, prediction task to teach reading and personalization tasks to assess reading as well as to teach and assess writing; discussion tasks to teach culture, and personalization tasks to assess culture and to wrap up a unit. The findings also reveal differences between middle schools teachers and high schools teachers in task choice. The factors teachers take into a considerations are explored. These results suggest changes for teacher training programs and the focus of research.

The purposes of this study are 1) to explore essay selection process to find out representative writing examples for a four-point rating scale, and 2) to validate rating scales based on the analysis of the key features of essays selected. In performance assessment, assessors have been confronted with challenging situations due to abstract and ambiguous scale descriptors, and insufficient rating practices. Benchmark essays (sample essays) are an alternative for assessors to improve the rating validity and to maintain their consistency. The rating data were derived from multiple ratings of seven assessors on 38 essays. Using a four-point scale with assessment criteria, assessors first gave scores on holistic score, then analytical scores on content, organization, and language use. The collected data were analyzed using the Many-Faceted Rasch Model (MFRM) and K-mean cluster analysis. The results showed that seven out of eight essays were representative for the rating scale, with one essay showing the unsuitable misfit statistic. Scale descriptors were modified based on the analysis of essays chosen. Implications of the findings were discussed in reference to the modifications of rating scale descriptors, improving assessor reliability, and writing instruction in EFL.
