In this data paper, we share the dataset obtained during 2019 from the test-bed to develop soil moisture estimation technology for upland fields, which was built in Seosan and Taean, South Korea on May 3. This dataset includes various e co-hydro-meteorological variables such as soil moisture, evapotranspiration, precipitation, radiation, temperature, humidity, and vegetation indices from the test-bed nearby the Automated Agricultural Observing System (AAOS) in Seosan operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration. There are three remarkable points of the dataset: (1) It can be utilized to develop and evaluate spatial scaling technology of soil moisture because the areal measurement with wide spatial representativeness using a COSMIC-ray neutron sensor as well as the point measurement using frequency/time domain reflectometry (FDR/TDR) sensors were conducted simultaneously, (2) it can be used to enhance understanding of how soil moisture and crop growth interact with each other because crop growth was also monitored using the Smart Surface Sensing System (4S), and (3) it is possible to evaluate the surface water balance by measuring evapotranspiration using an eddy covariance system.

The Early Warning System for agrometeorological hazard of the Rural Development Administration (Korea) forecasts detailed weather for each farm based on the meteorological information provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration, and estimates the growth of crops and predicts a meteorological hazard that can occur during the growing period by using the estimated detailed meteorological information. For verification of early warning system, automated weather observation network was constructed in the study area. Moreover, a real-time web display system was built to deliver near real-time weather data collected from the observation network. The meteorological observation system collected diverse meteorological variables including temperature, humidity, solar radiation, rainfall, soil moisture, sunshine duration, wind velocity, and wind direction. These elements were collected every minute and transmitted to the server every ten minutes. The data display system is composed of three phases: the first phase builds a database of meteorological data collected from the meteorological observation system every minute; the second phase statistically analyzes the collected meteorological data at ten-minutes, one-hour, or one-day time step; and the third phase displays the collected and analyzed meteorological data on the web. The meteorological data collected in the database can be inquired through the webpage for all data points or one data point in the unit of one minute, ten minutes, one hour, or one day. Moreover, the data can be downloaded in CSV format.

The daily gridded meteorological information and climatology with high resolution (30m and 270m) was produced from 94 Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for the past 50 years (1971-current) by different downscaling methods. In addition, the difference between daily meteorological data and the mean state of past 30 years (1981-2010) was calculated for the analysis of climate change. These datasets with GeoTiff format are available from the web interface (https://agecoclim.agmet.kr). The performance of the data is evaluated using 172 Automatic Weather Station (AWS) of Rural Development of Administration (RDA). The data have biases lower than 2.0, and root mean square errors (RMSE) lower than 3.8. This data may help to better understand the regional climatic change and its impact on agroecosystem in South Korea.

Shortwave radiation and sunshine hours (SHOUR) are important variables having many applications, including crop growth. However, observational data for these variables have low horizontal resolution, rendering its application to related research and decision making on farming practices challenging. In the present study, hourly solar radiation data were physically generated using the Land-Atmosphere Modeling Package (LAMP) at the National Center for Agro-Meteorology, and then daily SHOUR fields were calculated through statistical downscaling. After data quality evaluation, including case studies, the SHOUR data were added to the existing publically accessible LAMP daily database. The LAMP daily dataset, newly updated with SHOUR, has been provided operationally as input data to the “Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Drought Prediction System,” which predicts agricultural weather disasters and field crop growth status.

Agrivoltaic systems (AVS) is defined as combining farm-grown crops with photovoltaic panels (PV) installed several meters above the g round. Solar radiation (W /m2), photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD, μmol/m2/s), air temperature (℃), vapor pressure (kPa), soil moisture (m3/m3), soil temperature (℃), wind direction (˚), and wind speed (m/s) were measured under the AVS in Boseong-gun during winter barley season. Data was collected by 5 minute interval. All data can download at Github site (https://github.com/chojaeil/AVS_Boseung). To gap-filling missing solar radiation data during about two weeks, the conversion coefficient from solar radiation to PPFD was estimated as 0.41. Further, according to the ratio of diffuse radiation to direct radiation, the maximum value among the twenty PPFD sensors under the AVS was related to the PPFD value of filed.

The present study introduces a procedure to prepare and manage a high-resolution rainfall and soil moisture (SM) database in the LAMP prediction system, especially for landslide researchers. The procedure also includes converting the data into spatial resolution suitable for their interest regions following proper map projection methods. The LAMP model precipitation and SM data are quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated to identify the model prediction characteristics using the ERA5 reanalysis precipitation and observed 10m depth SM data. A detailed process of converting LAMP Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) output data for 10m horizontal resolution is described in a step-wise manner, providing technical convenience for users to easily convert NetCDF data from the WRF model into TIF data in ArcGIS. The converted data can be viewed and downloaded via the LAMP website (http://df.ncam.kr/lamp/index.do) of the National Center for AgroMeteorology. The constructed database will contribute to monitoring and prediction of landslide risk prior to landslide response steps and should be data quality controlled by more observation data.

The weather conditions, such as temperature, precipitation, and sunshine duration, play one of the key roles in Agriculture. In particular, extreme weather events have crucial impacts on growth and yields of crops. This study estimates statistics of extreme weather events in 167 Si-gun over South Korea derived from high-resolution(30 and 270m) topo-climatology model for key three meteorological variables(temperature, precipitation and sunshine duration). It is shown that the characteristic of each extreme weather frequency in the topo-climatology model is in good agreement with observation from Korean Meteorological Administration's Automatic Surface Observing System. Moreover, it is possible to analyze the statistics of extreme weather more realistically because this data can cover the weather at not-observed regions. Hence, this data is expected to be used as baseline data for assessing vulnerability to extreme weather and politic decisions for damage reduction in agricultural sector.

Studies in socioeconomic impacts of air pollution are inevitable to merge data of the air pollutant density, weather, and socioeconomic variables. Due to their spatiotemporal disparities in units, to combine these data are time and effort consuming generically. The data described in this article aims to provide the major variables of air pollution and weather at the Si-Gun-Gu level to meet the data needs from social science. The latest (August 2020) data distributed are the balanced panel of 250 Si-Gun-Gu in South Korea for 2001-2018. The weather variables in this data are directly applicable to other social science topics, which are not limited to air pollution research.

National Institute of crop Science of the Rural Development Administration (RDA) has conducted long-term monitoring studies to find out the relationship between crop yield and climatic factors for major food crops including rice. Rice growth and yield have been monitored in 17 regions where the branches of the National Institute of Crop science and the Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Service locate. The data obtained from monitoring studies for rice growth and yield include the observation of vegetative growth status and yield components, which include leaf number, biomass and the weight of 1000 grains. These data have been collected from rice fields where standard management procedures have been applied. The observation data for crop growth and yield monitoring studies from 1999 to 2019 are open to public through agricultural science library operated by RDA.
