This work demonstrated the application of an artificial neural network model for predicting the Jominy hardness curve by considering 13 alloying elements in low alloy steels. End-quench Jominy tests were carried out according to ASTM A255 standard method for 1197 samples. The hardness values of Jominy sample were measured at different points from the quenched end. The developed artificial neural network model predicted the Jominy curve with high accuracy (R2 = 0.9969 for training and R2 = 0.9956 for verification). In addition, the model was used to investigate the average sensitivity of input variables to hardness change. (Received December 8, 2017; Revised December 15, 2017; Accepted December 22, 2017)

The anodic oxidation behavior of Si-containing aluminum alloy for diecasting was investigated. Especially, the property changes during anodization both on aluminum 1050 and 9 weight percentage silicon containing aluminum (Al-9Si) alloys were analyzed by the static current test. In order to fabricate a uniform anodic oxidation film by effect of Al-Si compound, nitric acid containing hydrofluoric acid had been used as a desmutter for aluminum alloy after alkaline etching. It was found that the level of voltage of Al-9Si alloy during the static current test was almost as double as higher than aluminum 1050 through anodization. By adding hydrofluoric acid in the nitric acid electrolyte, the silicon compound on the surface was removed, and the optimum amount of added hydrofluoric acid could be derived. It was also observed that the size of silicon compound formed on the surface could be refined by heat treatment at 500 ℃ and followed water quenching. We investigated the corrosion behavior of commercially pure cold working processed (CP)-Ti with coarse-grained (CG) microstructure heat-treated at 400℃ and 600℃, respectively. It is observed that corrosion resistance of as-received CP-Ti heat-treated at 400℃, at which recrystallization proceeds, is largely improved. Interestingly, the mechanical property of CP-Ti sample at 400℃ was scarcely deteriorated. It is attributed to the decrease of the defects such as strain variance and dislocation density. On the other hand, the annealing treatment at 600℃ of CP-Ti plate causes to grain growth with the noticeable reduction of mechanical property. Hence, it is considered that defect density such as strain and dislocation density is important microstructural parameter for the improvement of corrosion resistance. The introduction of proper annealing treatment can help to improve corrosion resistance without scarifying mechanical property of CP-Ti. In this study, low cyclic fatigue test was carried out at room temperature condition for rolled STS304 steel. The results of this study show that rolled STS304 steel has excellent static tensile strength and fatigue characteristics. The relationship between plastic strain range and fatigue life was examined using the triangular wave in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of rolled STS304 steel by Coffin-Manson equation. Cyclic behavior of rolled STS304 steel was characterized by cyclic hardening with increasing number of cycle through the Hysteresis loop analysis and cyclic response of maximum stress versus number of cycles. It is found that the plastic deformation energy consumed per cycle is reduced by calculating the area of the hysteresis loop.
