This paper gives a short introduction into research on talk and interaction in psychotherapy from a conversation analytic (CA) perspective. It sketches the most important areas of research and the basic methodological considerations which guide CA studies. Asan example for CA work on psychotherapy, I report findings from my own study on therapists` use of questions. It is shown that second turn-questions which expand on a patient`s narrative are used as devices which are designed to elicit the patient`s reflection on his/her prior own statements and stories. In this way, they are maieutic devices, which induce the patient to extend or to re-interpret his/her story and to glean a psychologically relevant interpretation from the story. In their pursuit of engendering the patient`s own interpretation of his/her story, therapists act according to an order of preference of reactions to patients` narratives: The first option is to produce continuers, followed by silence and questions. Only if these devices did not work as to elicit interpretations from the patient`s side which the therapist regards as advancing the therapeutic agenda, therapists start to formulate interpretations by themselves. This order of preferential reactions reflects a preference for self-interpretation by the patient, which is supported by maieutic questioning.

Background: The need of development of medical communication subject is increasing. Recently many medical schools in Korea are newly developing the curriculum to teach medical students about communication. The purpose of this study is to develop a standard medical communication subject in a medical school to teach medical students about the knowledge, skills and attitude for effective medical communication. Methods: 5 professionals including 1 professor in family medicine, 1 professor in family medicine and medical education, 1 professor in linguistics, 1 professor in German, and 1 professor in computer science collaborated to review the references and survey the need of medical students, medical teachers, patients, and community people for medical communication education. We developed a standard medical communication subject by mutual consensus. Results: We developed the purposes of medical communication education, and developed learning subjects of medical communication. We also developed the tools of teaching medical communication and evaluation method to assess students` performances. Conclusion: The medical communication subject should be tailored to medical students` needs. Experiential learning for medical communication will be effective. The effect of "hidden curriculum" in a medical school should be considered, and the medical school faculties should be encouraged to continue showing good role models to the medical students.
